Babysitter On Board

Tales from the fast lane of Motherhood in OC

Home phone service for less than cost of a pedi? Seriously! July 10, 2008

I did something crazy today – I shut off my home phone. Well, not really, but I ditched the old land-line highway robbery and got a brand spakin new T-Mobile @Home home phone service router. It works awesome, and the best part is, I went from paying $45 a month for my phone bill to only $10! It will work out to around $12 with taxes but that is a huge savings! So much so that I also said a sad goodbuy to my faithful Vonage business line and handed it over to T-Mobile, saving me a grand total of $65 a month! WOW! I did have to buy their wireless router, $50, but I asked very politely and the young man agreed to waive the $35 activation fee – no sweat!

Now I know you may be thinking, oh no, not me, I could never. But trust me sister, you CAN and SHOULD give it a try. You’ve got nothing to lose with their 30 day guarantee and return policy and lot to gain! It comes with a CD that makes it so easy your kids could probably set the thing up, and it works like a dream with whatever home phone you already use.   Click Here for more info and jump on the VoIP Train!

Does anyone really get any “work” done, working at home? June 11, 2008

mommymixerI have been working at home for about 4 years now, through 2 pregnancies, 8 months of bed rest, my first daughter’s heart surgeries, a husband in the Marines, and everything else life has tossed at me. When I look back over the past 4 years something occurs to me, I really don’t get any work done at home! When I really need to meet a deadline, or listen in on a conference call, I head over to the Starbucks on the corner with my trusty laptop for a little peace and quiet. My job has been so flexible that this has not been an issue, and I have always gotten something done at some point, but I just wonder how other moms do it. Moms who have to get real work done on a daily basis, amidst the crying, napping, bottles, fish crackers, playdough, and play dates. I love the company I work for and what I do, it affords me an incredible amount of freedom and flexibility, and I am able to do 90% of everything via email and phone calls. I am currently the Orange County city manager for MommyMixer, a company that connects babysitters with moms at fun little networking mixers. I have so much fun at my events, meeting new moms and watching the great connections they make with the girls they meet! It is a great 2 hour break from being Mom and gives me a sense of self, of accomplishment and tiny glimpse of freedom. Just enough that by the end of the event I am ready to get back home to my kids and just be mom again.

Yay, I’m a Blogger! June 10, 2008

If you have stumbled upon this blog site by chance, I should start by saying I have never written a blog before. I have never written much of anything, aside from speeches for Girl Scout ceremonies and emails, millions of emails! So why start now, you ask? I am pretty much convinced that I am the only person left on the face of the earth that does not have a blog. Ok, so that’s an exaggeration, but whenever I post on community parenting forums and such, all of the other moms always have a blog listed in their profile. So, why not? I’ll give it a whirl, one more thing to do in my already busy day that may, or may not, make the cut. Heck, it’s hard to get even a little work done, let alone something requiring focus and thought like a blog. I’d much rather go to Disneyland than sit at my computer, but one can’t live all day at Disneyland. As with everything I do, I have big plans. The plans of an overachieving Super-Mom that has yet to learn the art of saying No when someone asks for help. I put a lot of thought into exactly what on earth I would write about in this blog. What do I have to share that anyone would care about? And then it occured to me. I own everything. Every stroller, car seat, bouncy thing, diaper pail and baby carrier known to mom. Well, not quite, but I own more than most people ever buy in a lifetime. I have a shopping habit. My friends all know that when they are in the market for anything related to an under 4 year old, I have probably tried it and can vouch for one brand or another. They also know that when they are bored and want to get out of the house, I am the one with the perpetual events calendar and GPS map in my head and can spout off local events and fun attractions like I was reading it from a book. So, this is what I will write about, I will write about what I know! Isn’t that where all good writers start, afterall?
